I will be 38 wks and 6 dys on Thursday and my doctor is going to induce me because the baby has apparently stopped growing. I told her I was taking Evening Primrose Oil and she looked shocked and said, "Stop taking that! Herbal suppliments like that can make your blood have trouble coagulating!" I started taking it because our doula/friend who is also a VERY experienced midwife recommended I start taking it at 36 weeks which I did. Who do I listen too? I truthfully would believe the midwife over the doctor because I know and love her and she loves us and is (like I said) very experienced and so often our doctor treats us like we are stupid and just another patient. She actually looks and acts angry and annoyed when we ask questions! So has anyone heard of EPO causing problems with coagulating or any other type of problem for that matter???
Should I continue taking Evening Primrose Oil to help ripen my cervix?
Well... I have heard tons of people take evening primrose oil and had no problems. Actually.... I've never heard of there being problems with it. Midwives tell their clients to take it all the time to help ripen the cervix. It has been going on successfully for centuries!
I think the problem with doctors telling things like this is that, they were never trained in the use of herbs, teas, tinctures, acupressure/acupuncture, or alternative therapies... so how do they know it is not good for you? They have 'heard' through rumors that something isn't good, so they pass that bad advice on. They don't actually know anything about it. That's like me telling you to NEVER whistle in the woods because a bear might attack you!! LOL I am not a bear expert! I don't know hardly anything 'true' about bears! How can I tell you something when I don't know anything about it? So, I don't think your doctor has any right to give you advice (so sternly) about something she knows nothing about!
I would trust your midwife.
Reply:I've never heard of it causing problems. I took it for 3 weeks before having my baby and didn't have any problems with bleeding or anything. I also think it really helped my cervix get ready. I also inserted it as a suppository so it could be directly on my cervix.
Reply:you should of told your doctor first....that why LOTS of things you read say NO herbal teas,or herbal supplements while pregnant
