My breast milk turned LIME GREEN - taking evening primrose 2x a day - anyone else hear of this? is it ok? HELP

My son is 7 months old - still nursing all the time - my doctor said my DHEA hormone level was too low after a blood test and reccomended i take 10mg a day, i went to the health food store to get some and the told me NOT to take it but to take evening primrose instead. for 3 days i have taken 1300mg 2 times a day. i happend to pump my milk last night and it is BRIGHT LIME GREEN looks radio active! I am not even sure if i should let him drink it ( although he has been continuing to nurse) I am not ready to give up nursing at all. should i stop taking evening primrose? should i take the DHEA? the reasons i was supposed to take the DHEA is to help with sleep, weight management, and sex drive.. anyone else hear of bright green milk???

dont give it to the baby

and go see the doctor
Reply:My question for you is: if your doctor told you to take DHEA, 10mg a day, why are you listening to the person at the health food store and taking 1300mg x 2 per day of evening primrose instead?

I'm all for homeopathic medicine, but now look what's happened. You're on here asking this question about bright green breast milk, which wouldn't have happened if you'd listened to your doctor.

I highly advise you to go back to your doctor and LISTEN to him this time.

Edit: I just have to respond. I highly doubt the person at the health food store is trained or licensed to give you this sort of advice. Nothing going into the body while nursing is completely safe, with the exception of your usual food and drink. However, alternative medicines, herbs, etc. are not regulated like conventional medicines are. I think that you should avoid taking the evening primrose and see if your milk changes back to its normal colour. If it doesn't, you know it was the multivitamin (though I doubt it). You could always avoid taking anything at all. Sleep when baby is sleeping, eat sensibly and do light exercises (breastfeeding also helps to reduce weight after pregnancy). As for the sex drive, it is entirely normal to not feel in the mood after having a baby. Your husband, and you, should understand that and not let it bother you.
Reply:"Green milk is unusual but is not usually harmful. The green color may be related to iron supplements, intake of artificial dyes, or ingesting large amounts of green vegetables. If the green milk is only coming from one breast, or is thicker than the usual breast milk pumped your sister should contact her personal health care provider.

Green stools in an exclusively breast fed infant (an infant not receiving any other food, or vitamin supplementation) is most likely due to the infant receiving the lactose-loaded foremilk and not enough of the fat-calorie-rich hind milk. Let the nursing child continue nursing until he self-detaches which may be ten to thirty minutes for a young child. If the infant determines when to switch breast and continues to have green stools this should be discussed with his health care provider."
Reply:Atleast for two weeks try giving the baby the bottle. That may help you get your body back in balanced.
Reply:You listened to some idiot salesperson at a health food store??? Let me get this str8... Your doctor said, "You need to take this to breastfeed your baby, for his sake and yours," and wrote you a prescription... but instead, you decided to take unregulated tablets made of ground up flowers and figured that would be just dandy...... Well, your breastmilk may have turned green because it was embarassed to be affiliated with you. Take what the doctor prescribed and quit taking non-prescription things while nursing, please!!!
Reply:I know that suppliments can change the color of your urine, so one would expect that it could also affect the color of your breastmilk. I know that when I eat a lot of spinach, my breastmilk has a green color. The evening primrose is safe for nursing mothers, so as long as your son is not exhibiting signs of intolerance, you should keep nursing. For peace of mind, contact a natural healthcare provider. Good Luck!!
Reply:That is just plain weird. Go to the doctor- you might even need to be hospitalized unless it's normal although I've never heard of it.
Reply:breatmilk can take on my colors. I was taking a vitamin supplement that makes my milk look radioactive. As long as the medicine has been approved for a nursing mother, then you are fine.
Reply:DONT let your baby drink this at all!

I dont know anything about it but just for safety in the mean time, dont let him nurse or drink the pumped breast milk.
Reply:Yes, I had green milk which was related to a breast infection. I had to have anti-biotic's and stop breast feeding :-(. Not good. Go to your Dr. If it is Mastitis nip it in the bud now. It's agonising.
Reply:Wow thats going to get some one a good medical case report ! go see a doc , but yeah dont give him the milk , that aint normal
Reply:dont give ur baby lime greeen breast milk...

go to the doctor!!

that is not normal that can be VERY bad for your baby.
